After-School Tutoring:
Did you know that over half of refugees admitted to the US are under the age of 25? Our After-School Program works with k-12 East African refugee students to offer basic homework assistance. Each tutor works closely with a group of 4-5 students, leading them through supplementary curriculum and providing general homework support. We'll make materials available to help you.
We offer a secondary tutoring opportunity at Cleveland High School, but this position requires familiarity and comfort with high school level subject matter, in particular, science and math.
Schedule:
Mon-Thurs 4-6pm OR Mon-Thurs 2:30-4:30 at Cleveland High School
Computer Literacy Instructor:
These classes represent a chance for our clients to thrive and compete in a technology-driven world where their employability is greatly increased with computer literacy. Working in a collaborative classroom environment with other tutors and a dedicated facilitator (and ad hoc interpreter), you will teach the basics like "Mouse 101" and navigating Word, and help set up personal emails. You should be flexible and patient—ideally with some teaching or tutoring experience—and be comfortable with computer basics: Microsoft Office, navigating the internet, and internet-based email (Gmail, Yahoo, MSN, or Hotmail).
Schedule:
Thurs: 6-7:30pm; Fri: 5:30-7pm; Sat: 2:30-4pm
ESL Talk-Time Facilitator:
Thrice a week, EACS offers casual Talk-Times to interested community members to practice speaking English in a small-group, low-stress environment. Some clients use this opportunity to complement other ESL classes or services; others who speak fairly comfortably attend to build fluency in particular areas. The Talk-Times have covered things as diverse as Safari animals to Washington geography, and Rudyard Kipling poetry to recipes. They require some preparation time on the part of the tutor, but not intensive.
Schedule:
Mon-Weds 6-8pm
Administrative Support:
Get involved with the East African refugee community in an administrative role to support sustainable change and improvements. Duties would include opportunities like seeking sources for sustainable funding and donations, sharing success stories with the larger community to increase awareness of community needs, and creating systems to improve the educational environment for our students. As this opportunity requires writing, please submit a writing sample (max. 5 pages) with your application.
